Hyunwoo (Grade 12)
Describe your selected CAS experience or project.
Cycling is a CAS activity that I started when I realized I was extremely weak in stamina, and this lack of endurance started influencing my academic performances. Through this CAS activity, I decided to increase my stamina to keep myself healthy and strong and to transfer that newfound confidence into my academics. I aimed to cycle every Sunday using my road cycle, but then I also swapped to a mountain bike to have an off-road experience and learn balancing, speed management, and weight positioning as I challenged myself on more difficult terrain. When I was riding my road cycle, I improved my average speed and distance traveled slowly but steadily. When I was riding my mountain bike, I improved my skills by increasing the difficulty of my trails. Although I got injured a couple of times, it was still worth the experience.
Describe your successes and challenges within this experience or project.
Throughout my cycling experience, I can confidently say that I improved a variety of physical abilities, such as strength, stamina, endurance…etc, but there were also a lot of challenges. I sustained some injuries from falling off my bike, although there weren’t any major injuries because I always wore safety gear. Still, scratches to my face, elbows, and knees were common.
Describe how you met one of your selected learning outcomes within this experience or project.
One of my learning outcomes is to “identify my own strengths and develop areas for growth.” Through this experience, I successfully managed to identify my perceived physical limitations, and I developed these areas by constantly pushing myself to the limit and giving me an opportunity for development.
Anything else you’d like to add?
It would be valuable for other students to have an experience similar to mine.
