SPARK Program
At Dwight Seoul, we’re committed to the notion that a student’s health and well-being are crucial to their educational journey and overall achievement. This conviction is at the heart of our SPARK program, an innovative and holistic initiative designed to equip students with the necessary skills and insights for self-care and personal growth.
The SPARK program honors and embraces the richness of diverse backgrounds. It breathes life into the Learner Profile attributes, fostering a community where students are nurtured to be balanced and compassionate, to communicate effectively, and to maintain a sense of wonder about the world they live in.
SPARK is an acronym for:
Social and Emotional Wellbeing
Students learn emotional management and wellbeing through mindfulness, relationship building, mental care, and stress coping strategies.
Physical Wellbeing
Students learn about healthy eating, exercise, and sleep habits.
Action and Agency
Students learn to establish goals, navigate challenges, and make responsible decisions. This process nurtures students to develop the knowledge and skills needed for their “spark of genius.”
Responsibility
Students explore and understand their rights and duties, gaining the essential knowledge required to make well-informed decisions.
Knowledge
Students learn to be responsible, respectful, and caring digital and global citizens, developing time management and interpersonal skills for effective communication and management of their academic and personal lives.
Dwight’s SPARK program is intricately connected to our foundational philosophy of personalized learning, community, and global vision. This is because the program offers students a range of learning experiences that touch on various facets of health and wellbeing, as well as fostering an understanding of international mindedness and global citizenship.
There are many benefits to the SPARK program, including:
- Improved student health and wellbeing
- Increased student engagement and motivation
- Improved academic performance
- Reduced risky behaviors
- Increased self-esteem and confidence
- Stronger social and emotional skills
- Better preparation for life after high school
We hold assemblies to honor student accomplishments, serving as an opportunity to highlight and appreciate various themes from the international mindedness calendar. For students in the Upper School, these gatherings are complemented by club activities and sessions with their advisory teacher to discuss and set goals.
The SPARK program is a valuable part of our school community. It helps students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to live healthy and successful lives.
Once a month, students are engaged in multi-aged activities that are creative and dynamic through the House System. They collaborate with different students, build community amongst peers, and compete in a healthy competition for house points building a sense of belonging.
Dwight’s House System
The Dwight Seoul House System fosters school spirit, a sense of belonging, and healthy competition among students, encouraging them to actively engage in school life beyond academics.
It promotes identity formation, celebrates achievements, and facilitates teamwork and friendships across different grades. By involving students in the House System, we aim to nurture talents, leadership, creative thinking, and recognize achievements.
Every student and staff member at Dwight is assigned to one of four houses, each symbolizing legendary creatures from Korean mythology: Baekho (White Tiger), Cheongyong (Blue Dragon), Jujak (Red Phoenix), and Hyunmu (Black Tortoise), ensuring family members share the same house. House competitions and events are integral to daily life, enhancing the sense of community through classroom activities, recess, and monthly whole-school House Afternoons.
