Faculty Friday: Duarte Carreiro

Duarte is  originally from the Azores, Portugal. This is a small archipelago of islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. He moved to the United States at a young age where his interest in science and mathematics was able to grow. After graduating with a Physics degree and traveling the world, Duarte decided to try teaching and has never looked back. Although he has many interests, he mainly focuses his time and attention on refining his craft as a science educator.

What is your role at Dwight School Seoul?

I am an MYP Science & DP Physics teacher. I teach Physics for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade. I am also a Quest teacher for mathematics and am an 8A Advisor. With all my tasks and responsibilities, there is never a dull moment at Dwight.

What made you decide to work in an education setting?  And what is your philosophy?

I am fascinated with truth and always have been. This has led me to have a strong interest in Physics. I also firmly believe in the value and virtue of education. I believe humans gain purpose when they contribute to the betterment of humanity and helping young minds better understand the laws of nature, is one small way I feel I can contribute.

As a Math and Physics teacher, my goal is to instill a sense of wonder and appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the universe. Unfortunately, this complexity becomes a barrier to those who struggle with analytical thinking. Students who are typically “scared” of math may feel discouraged by the content and too easily pigeonhole themselves in an academic corner. One of my missions as an educator is to lure them out.

What do you like the most about working at DSS?

The facilities, including the Physics lab in room 407.

What are your interests and or hobbies?

I like to play soccer (in person and on through FIFA on PlayStation). I also have a strong interest in nutrition and fitness. I try to work out and I often think about what kinds of foods I should eat to maximize my results in the gym.

Who inspires you and how?

Cristiano Ronaldo inspires me because he embodies the qualities that I admire in a person. As a fellow Portuguese, I am proud of his success and his contributions to our country. His relentless work ethic and constant drive to improve have always impressed me and serve as an inspiration for me to work hard and pursue my own goals with determination. In addition, his charitable efforts and willingness to give back to others make me strive to be more compassionate and selfless in my own life. Ronaldo’s talent, dedication, and generosity make him a role model for me and many others around the world.

What is the best book or production that you have read, watched, or listened to lately?

I am currently watching the Apple TV+ drama series called See. It stars Jason Momoa and is set in a future where humankind has lost the ability to see and is forced to interact in new ways.

What one particular social issue calls out to you and why?

Access to education. Education is a transformative force that has the power to change lives and communities, but unfortunately, there are still many people around the world who do not have access to quality educational resources and opportunities. This may be due to poverty, conflict, discrimination, or a lack of infrastructure. When individuals do not have access to education, they may face reduced job opportunities, lower income, and limited participation in society. Education is essential for personal and societal development and growth, and I believe that providing access to education is the best way to break down barriers and create a more equitable and just world.

What is one fun fact about you that others may not know or may surprise them?

I would like to open my own gym where grunting and slamming weights is not only allowed but encouraged. It would be targeted at the quintessential “bro” and I would call it NYM GYM which stands for not your mama’s gym. I already own www.nymgym.com so let’s see what happens next.

Why would you tell a prospective family to choose DSS?

In my opinion, DSS is run and operated by very competent and smart administrators. The Dwight leadership is focused, and they continually strive to promote and enable the IB learner profile in all students.
